SAFETY IN METALCUTTING

Modern metalcuting operations involve high energy, high spindle or cutter speeds, and high temperatures and cutting forces. Hot , flying chips may be projected from the workpiece during metalcutting. Altoughh the non-dectile cemented carbide cutting tools used in metalcutting operations are designed and manufactured to withstand the high cutting operations, they are susceptible to fragmentating in service, particularly if they are subjected to over-stress, severe impact or otherwise abused. Therefore, percautions should be taken to adequately protect workmen, observers and equipment against hot, flying chips, fragmented cutting tools, broken workpieces, carbide particles, or other similiar projectiles. Machines should be fully guarded and personal protective equipment should be used.
When grinding or frabricating cemented carbide, a suitable means for collection and disposal of dust, mist or sludge should be provided inhalation of dust or mist containing metallic particles can be hazardous, particularly if exposure continues over an extended period of time. Therefore, adequate ventilation should be provided. Relative government regulations should be consulted.
Tungsten carbide edges, and related supporting holders such as milling cutters and boring bars, are only one part of the man-machine-tool system. Many variables exist in machining operations, including the metal removal rate; the workpiece size, shape, strength and rigidity; the fixturing; the cutter and spindle speed and torque limitations; the holder and boring bar overhang; the available power; and the condition of the tooling and machines. A safe matalcutting operation must take all of these variables into consideration.
